Adding the Morning Sky

For the sky I had decided that I wanted it to be dark blue at the bottom to a gradated light thalo blue at the top.  How can I get an even flat wash, painting around the stems, and background poppies.  I thought masking?  No way, today Guy Magallanes showed me the coolest technique, you can teach old dogs new tricks!   Using this is the result of the darkest value of my sky, tomorrow I plan on finishing the sky with a thalo blue wash.

  3. I wondered the same thing...what is Guy's technique?

  4. If you go to Guy's blog "My E "Scapes" I am sure Guy would give a much better description of his technique than I could. It would be much better coming straight from the artist that developed this technique than his student.
    If I may just say one more thing, somewhat on this topic;
    As an instructor, I love to give credit where credit is due. If I am instructing a workshop and am teaching a technique, or using a pigment combination developed by another artists or even a term or the instructor's words, that I have picked up from another instructor, I will state this to my students. Being authentic and orignal is the heart of excelling as an artist/instructor.
    There is that special something underneath it all, that originates from an artist that is truly theirs. However when you see or hear an instructor imitate another instructors words, subject, palette or technique as their own, it will always fall short, because it is not truly from their heart. I am not speaking about the subject in which the artist/student paints, after taking a workshop. I teach to inspire artists to paint what moves them if that subject is in the same vein as what I paint that is a bonus for me.

  5. JOYCE,
    I REALLY ENJOYED TAKING YOUR 3 DAY
    ICELAND POPPY WORKSHOP. IT HAS HELPED
    ME TO FEEL THAT I CAN APPLY THE
    LEARNED TECHNIQUES TO MY FUTURE
    PAINTINGS. I WOULD RECOMMEND YOUR
    WORKSHOPS TO ANYONE THAT WOULD LIKE
    TO LEARN HOW TO APPLY THAT EXTRA
    SOMETHING TO THEIR PAINTINGS. WE
    LEARNED SO MUCH AND HAD A GOOD TIME
    DOING SO. AS WE ALL SAID YOU ARE A
    GREAT TEACHER! EVELYN SLEPPY
